About Competex

Charles Fowler set up Competex as a specialist accountancy practice in 2000 to assist interim managers and consultants who were affected by the IR35 legislation. Charles originally trained with Price Waterhouse in London and qualified as a chartered accountant in 1972.

18 years later, the business has further evolved, to assist all those offering professional services, to manage their company and handle their finances.  Not only have the rules appertaining to IR35 become more complex but other compliance issues and regulations have also become more stringent. Originally based in an office in Charles’s home, the business has now expanded to employ over 25 staff.

Nowadays, Competex supports in excess of 600 clients and offers them the assistance and expertise to be able to run their companies efficiently and successfully. Operating as an online accountant, Competex can handle the financial affairs of all start-up and existing freelancers, contractors and independent professionals, wherever they are based.​

Competex opened its payroll umbrella company, Competex Umbrella Ltd, in 2017. Competex Umbrella is particularly suited to interim managers, consultants and senior professionals that are working independently for clients in the public sector or the charity/not-for-profit sector that are governed by the ‘Off-Payroll working’ rules, or that might for any other reason be expected to go onto their client’s payroll.

Competex also owns and manages the Interim Hub, an online resource offering a wide range of services for people who are either leaving the security of permanent employment to set up as interim managers, or for seasoned interims wishing to access further skills and knowledge to expand their business or improve efficiency. Through the Interim Hub, consultants can access a range of professional services, training events and free online resources to help them further their interim businesses.
